What's in a name? I got to thinking about names when working on Peter Hesketh’s article about Ribble in this issue. What a great name! We tend to moan rather when a much-loved name disappears, and most of the large transport groups have eliminated rather a lot in the zealous fervour of corporate pride. However, in our modern fast-changing world, clinging on to a name that may no longer be appropriate could be damaging to both the business and the name.
By the time of privatisation Ribble somehow wasn’t quite the same Ribble anymore. Isn't it what the name stood for that really matters? If the character and personality of a company has diminished or changed, it may be better to let the name live on as a wonderful memory rather than allowing its reputation to be sullied.
